Shining a light on leadership behaviours in events

29th October 2026

When you sit in an audience and the lights go down, you see the result of months of work. What you rarely see is the village of people who made that moment possible.

Similar to the beautiful dining experience you have in a high end restaurant without ever seeing the chefs who creatively craft your food.

As a venue CEO, my job is to help that village succeed: setting a clear vision and expectations, ensuring our people have the support, resources and confidence to deliver.

Vision is only the starting point. Planning. Promotion. Preparation, Execution and Review follow. Each stage matters. A great idea needs a practical plan. It also needs to reach the right people.

Promoting an event takes creativity, coordination and persistence. Behind every ticket sold is work to build awareness, communicate what makes the event special and give people a reason to be there. Our teams work closely with organisers to turn interest into bookings, helping give each event its best chance of success.

From there, careful preparation brings the plan to life. And even a successful event deserves an honest review: what worked, what did we learn, and how can we do better?

Running through every stage is one constant: people.

We have two sets of customers and two perspectives on success. We serve both the organiser who trusts us with their event and the person who comes through our doors to experience it.

Their needs differ, but our approach should start in the same place: walk in their shoes. See the event from where they are standing or sitting.

For an organiser, that might mean understanding the pressure of delivering something they have spent a year building. For an audience member, it could mean clear information, a warm welcome, an accessible route to their seat or someone who notices they need help.

Inclusivity has to be part of every decision. Everybody matters, and the experience should reflect that.

The customer comes first. However, my team equally matter. High standards depend on people who understand what is expected and feel equipped to deliver it. That means listening to the team, respecting their expertise and giving them the information and authority to act. It also means being visible when the pressure rises, backing good judgement and helping resolve problems.

The colleague welcoming guests, the technician checking the sound and the cleaner preparing the space all influence the customer experience. Leadership means recognising those contributions and making sure people understand how their work connects.

Questions I keep coming back to are - how can we do better? How can we elevate the customer experience? How can we ensure incredible lasting memories? Sometimes the answer is a major investment. Often, it is a small improvement spotted by someone closest to the work. Creating space for those ideas is a key part of the CEO’s job.

Ultimately, our purpose is to create the best possible experiences and lasting memories. We provide the setting for moments people may talk about for years to come.

It takes a village to make that happen. My job is to help that village do its best work.
