Exhausted by the falseness and flashness of modern life, Mitski took to writing songs that stripped away the masks and revealed the complex and often contradictory nature of reality.

The songs that resulted embody that space. “Heat Lightning,” a hypnotic, melancholy ode to insomnia and the “Sleeping Eyelid of the Sky” turns in a sensual R&B direction halfway through, while “The Only Heartbreaker”—cowritten with Dan Wilson, and the first such song in her discography—pairs soaring pop swells with deceptively straightforward lyrics whose sincere refrain turns ironic.
Mitski is a truly unique talent who's lyrics can transcend any performance to strike an emotional chord with her audience and give everyone in attendance something different... something they need.
