Escape to the Ulster Hall, Belfast for an evening on Friday 12 May 2023 as the Ulster Orchestra present A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Schumann’s Violin Concerto is an enigmatic work with a fascinating backstory, though is perhaps less well-known than other violin concertos.
Take time to acquaint yourself with its beautiful stillness and you’ll be glad you gave yourself that time to escape – as its achingly beautiful slow movement gives way to the lilting finale, this is a work to bring calm to the soul. Then, in the company of singers from Northern Ireland Opera, we head to an Athenian forest for an hour, for Mendelssohn’s complete incidental music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Skittish fairies, star-crossed lovers and even the braying of a donkey find their way into the score, which matches the darting, whimsical Shakespeare tale to perfection.
