Acclaimed local theatre stars, Gerard McCabe and Michael Condron launch Soda Bread Theatre Company with the Irish premiere of Borderland at Belfast Waterfront on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 January.
This stunning, atmospheric, timely and extremely funny début by writer, Andrew Doyle, strikes a balance between the myths, loyalties and destruction of Northern Ireland’s past with new hope in an uncertain future.
Brothers Sean (Gerard McCabe) and Ciaran (Michael Condron) are in trouble. Their work as delivery men has all but dried up as the peace process continues to pressurise their paramilitary clients.
In a supposedly peaceful Northern Ireland they are standing at a crossroads, with one last delivery to make and a future to find. What’s in the box…? As their last ‘errand’ lands on the doorstep they bow to curiosity and take a peek…

Media praise for Borderland to date (also co-starring Michael Condron):
“Intelligent, witty and often thought-provoking” (The Times)
“Full of black humour and sharp dialogue” (The Guardian)
“It’s a play that challenges and entertains, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats even beyond the final moment – political theatre with an exciting metaphorical edge. Doyle’s Borderland attempts and achieves far more than most plays do. See it if you can, buy the text if you can’t.” (Edinburgh Guide)
“Tremendously effective… the simmering debate about what enables someone to kill for a cause, or, indeed, prevents them from doing so, explodes onto the stage” (The Sunday Herald)
“A sharp domestic black comedy – with a touch of mythology and magical realism.” (The Scotsman)
“A thoughtful and engaging two-hander that shows Doyle to be a highly promising arrival on the writing scene” (Hi-Arts)
“An assured debut from a playwright with great promise” (The List)
