Duke Special adds glamour to Bruiser theatre première
04 February 2010
The opening night of Bruiser Theatre Company`s latest production - The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui - promises to be even more memorable due to a Waterfront appearance by Belfast music star, Duke Special.
Playing at Belfast Waterfront`s Studio from Tuesday 16 to Thursday 18 February, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui is political theatre at its best and most powerful and is one of Bertolt Brecht’s best known plays.
A Bruiser Theatre Company patron, Duke Special will perform two songs on the Studio stage before introducing the cast of Arturo Ui for its première performance.
Duke Special is no stranger to the works of Brecht, having recently completed a hugely successful run of Mother Courage and her Children at London`s National Theatre where he composed and performed all the music for the production with his band.
“It was an amazing experience working at the National Theatre on ‘Mother Courage’ and it has definitely influenced the direction in which I want to take my own performances,” Duke Special enthused.
“I`m also very excited about Bruiser`s forthcoming production of ‘The Resistible Rise Of Arturo Ui’ coming up at the Waterfront in Belfast and on tour around the country in February and March. I`m delighted to be one of Bruiser`s patrons and to be involved with a company whose work is of such a high standard. I`m also interested in how the worlds of music and theatre overlap and influence each other, so it`s great to be associated with a theatre group who explore this area.”
Directed by Lisa May and adapted by Ralph Manheim, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui is an alarming and savagely hilarious allegory of Hitler`s rise to power. The Führer is portrayed as charismatic Chicago gangster Arturo Ui, who endeavours to seize the city`s fruit and vegetable racket from top-dog Al Capone. He systematically seduces the public and eliminates his political rivals in his bid for total domination.
Six actors play over fifty characters to bring the story to life in true Bruiser style!
There will also be performances of The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui on Wednesday 17 & Thursday 18 February at 11am.
Thursday 18 February (8pm) is a captioned performance.
