Johann Strauss Gala captures Old Vienna magic
11 November 2009
Music and dance lovers will be transported back in time to the glittering ballrooms of 19th Century Vienna when the Johann Strauss Gala comes to Belfast Waterfront on Friday 29 January.
The Johann Strauss Gala is the definitive celebration of the ‘Waltz King,’ Johann Strauss, and his sparkling legacy. This magical showcase, celebrates the most popular music, dance and song from the Strauss family.
Directed from the violin by David Juritz, the Johann Strauss Orchestra perform a host of traditional favourites including Blue Danube Waltz, Radetzky March, Champagne Polka and Tritsch Tratsch Polka.
The Orchestra is accompanied by the Johann Strauss Dancers in exquisite costumes of the period. Their dances capture and enhance the spirit of the music and have been created by award-winning choreographer Christopher Hampson whose work has included pieces for English National Ballet and Royal New Zealand Ballet.
Many of the most popular songs of the day will be brought to life by mesmerizing soprano soloist Caroline MacPhie.
19th Century Vienna was awash with opulent parties as people became hypnotized by the latest dance craze - the waltz. Ballrooms were filled with starry-eyed couples who reveled in this new phenomenon. The waltz started life as a peasant folk dance but was soon adopted by the urban classes and the market was cornered by Johann Strauss Snr, the grandfather of light music composers. The Strauss family soon held a monopoly on the waltz and polka as they fed the insatiable demand of Vienna`s dancing enthusiasts.
