Belfast City Council Environmental Policy

Our vision

We are committed to protecting the environment and improving quality of life for all current and future Belfast residents.

It is our job to work with others to protect and improve our environment and use our natural resources carefully.

This includes working with public and private sector bodies, non-governmental organisations, communities and residents.

The council aims to lead, promote and take part in these partnerships so we can improve Belfast’s environment for everyone.

Our values

We recognise that:

  • we all depend on the environment for our basic needs
  • the environment is a source of economic prosperity
  • if we fail to protect the environment, it will affect our own lives and future generations.

Our commitment

We want to set a good example and contribute to protecting and improving Belfast’s environment.

We will do this by:

  • reducing (as far as possible) any negative effects our activities may have on the environment
  • identifying opportunities to improve the environment
  • working with others to promote environmental protection
  • encouraging an environmentally-responsible approach to using natural resources
  • sticking to environmental laws and regulations
  • developing clear communications with our employees, main stakeholders and communities
  • identifying opportunities within our capital programme to make buildings environmentally-friendly
  • providing environmental training to all our staff
  • setting realistic aims and targets and making sure our environmental policy and strategy are put into practice
  • monitoring and reviewing our environmental procedures so they continue to be effective
  • applying the principles of continual improvement and preventing pollution.
